Solar wind particles entering Earth’s atmosphere can produce spectacular displays in the night sky, known as aurorae. The colorful lights are a result of atmospheric gas interacting with the solar particles. The Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights, can be seen north of about latitude 50°N. Similar lights in the southern sky are known as Aurora Australis.
